I am fortunate enough to be attending the first Food Bloggers of Canada conference in April. As part of the pre-conference swag, I received a Dutch Oven, a Brasier pan and a Chicken Leg Griller from Nordic Ware USA. I got my package back in February, I’ve already used all of the pieces several times, and I'm enjoying them. A couple friends have asked me what my thoughts are abut them so I thought I'd share a couple of thoughts with you. I’m reviewing the Chicken Griller first and will follow up with the Braiser Pan and the Dutch Oven review shortly.
I recently used the chicken leg griller to cook some prosciutto-wrapped chicken legs. When I’ve made this in the past, I've usually put the chicken in a baking dish in the oven. While one side comes out dry and crispy, the other side doesn’t. I prepared the chicken as per normal and placed the griller in on a parchment-lined pan. The griller stood about 3¼ inches off the pan, which means that the chicken didn’t sit in its juices while it cooked. Because of the height of the griller, I had to adjust the oven shelves to accommodate the height.
After 40 mins, the chicken was done, and when I took it out of the oven there were a couple of noticeable differences with the chicken this time. The chicken was evenly cooked all the way around, and it was crispy and considerably drier than it would have otherwise been. There was also very little “juice” sitting on the parchment. Instead, the chicken retained its juices and had minimal run off on the parchment.
To clean, I simply immersed the griller into a sink full of warm soapy water and washed the residue off before putting it in the dish drainer to dry. If I had room in my dishwasher, I could have probably tossed the whole thing in there.
I quite like this griller and have no hesitation on recommending it to anyone who’s interested in trying it out. It’s easy to use, durable, cooks chicken evenly, and most importantly is easy-to-clean. I’m looking forward to using the griller A LOT this summer. There’s room to do up 17 chicken legs at a time, and that’s perfect if you’re having a family BBQ, or if you’re hosting a party. We often go to a friend’s cottage, or to the beach for lazy Sunday picnics, and this’ll definitely be coming with me.
One thing to note: This griller takes up a lot of space in the oven, and I'm anticipating that it probably also will on the BBQ grill, you will need plan your meal prep accordingly because you may not be able to cook multiple things at a time while that’s in use. I don’t know if Nordic Ware has a small griller for perhaps 6 legs because that would be ideal for a two-person family, or condo dwellers where space or quantity might be an issue.
